Dry needling is an invasive treatment where sterile needles are placed into the skin and muscle to target myofascial trigger points. Myofascial trigger points are sensitive points in the taut muscle that can cause pain, restriction in range of movement and results in a loss of function or sporting performance. Dry needling aims to create a local twitch response which is an involuntary contraction of your muscle fibers. Triggering this response has been shown to result in a relaxation of the muscles and therefore decrease pain and increased movement.
Your therapist will carefully assess you prior to any form of dry needling to ensure that there no contraindications. Majority of the time dry needling is painless, but you might experience some discomfort during and post the treatment. Results can be seen immediately in some cases but majority of patients will begin to reap the benefits within three days post a dry needling session.
