What is Lymphatic Drainage Therapy?

Lymphatic Drainage Therapy

Firstly what isn’t it…

It is not just a massage! Lymphatic Drainage Therapy is a technique developed by Dr. Bruno Chikly, where practitioners are able to identify the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow. This particular style of lymphatic drainage has a very light and gentle touch, and might not feel like much is being done, even though fluid and lymph is actually being moved and manipulated. It is also an extremely relaxing and calming treatment.

What is the lymph and lymphatic system…

The lymph is a clear and transparent or white liquid. It consists of water, lipids (fats), proteins, enzymes, urea, minerals, hormones, lymphocytes, toxins, bacteria, body waste etc. As for the lymphatic system, very simply put, it’s your body’s ‘sewage’ network. It transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, collecting toxins on the way and flushing them out through the lymph nodes, helping to reduce toxins in the body. The lymph system is also part of your body’s immune system and helps fight infection.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (LDT)…

LDT can activate the lymph circulation, indirectly stimulating the circulation of the body, reducing edemas. Draining the lymph into lymph nodes which can increase the production of lymphocytes, thus stimulating and boosting our immune system. This can decrease chances of suffering minor colds and viruses and helps the body fight off infection, as well as speed up healing and recovery from illnesses. LDT also drains toxins and protein-rich fluids, reducing fluid retention. It can also reduce pain and muscle spasm and last but not least, helps with relaxation.

Who will benefit from LDT…

Anyone looking for detoxification, reducing water retention and swelling, rejuvenation and boosting the immune system.

A final note…

If you are not getting any or much lymphatic drainage done, then one of the best things you can do for yourself is to be more active. Any physical activity no matter how gentle can encourage a healthy lymph flow, as movement of the muscles exert pressure on the lymphatic vessels and keeps them moving.
