The Gut and the Brain – A strange association

Your child seems behind in their development? Having problems concentrating? The teacher complains about their hyperactive behaviour at school? Increasingly, parents ask themselves – is there something wrong with my child?

When you speak to your family doctor or naturopath the answer will very often be associated with your child’s gut. How weird! What does the gut have to do with brain development? Surprisingly, a lot.

Almost every day new facts emerge from the research labs all over the world about what influence microbes in our intestines have on our central nervous system. The good bacteria in our guts are able to create neurotransmitters that are similar to the bacteria our brain creates. In addition, lactobacillus can communicate with the brain via the vagus ner
ve.

But there is more. The moment beneficial bacteria species are diminished, harmful ones such as Clostridia and Candida Albicans take over. Unfortunately they don’t mean well. Their metabolic products seem to disturb the making of important neurotransmitters and bring them out of balance. Other abnormal agents unleash oxidative molecules which
damage crucial enzymes of the neuronal energy production and destroy
sensitive nerval structures such as
the neurofibrils. Furthermore, the aggressive oxidative agents deplete the brain cells of glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant our body has to offer. A vicious circle thereby ensues.

Studies have shown the presence of increased Clostridia metabolites in individuals with autism andother neuropsychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and anorexia nervosa.
The good news is, that there is A LOT we can do to rebalance the intestinal flora and give the body back the stability it deserves.
