Was your child delivered prematurely?

Or have you noticed a difference between your child’s and his/her peers’ physical development?

Gross and fine motor skill development at a young age is important as it sets them up for life. Provide the best possible support for your baby’s growth and development, setting them up for success in their early years.

Developmental Milestone Assessment and Support

At City Osteopathy and Physiotherapy, our paediatric physiotherapists will conduct an in-depth gross and fine motor skill development assessment, and provide an exercise protocol to help boost your child’s development.

Here’s our approach to support your child’s development

We conduct a thorough assessment of your baby’s development. This assessment includes the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS), which evaluates the quality and fineness of your baby’s movements. Through specific subtests, we determine your baby’s age equivalent and provide descriptive ratings to help you understand their progress. Additionally, we assess their composite performance in gross motor and fine motor skills, giving you valuable insights into their overall development.

To ensure you have a clear understanding of what to expect in the next phase of your baby’s development, we provide you with a comprehensive developmental guide brochure. This brochure outlines the milestones and growth patterns you can anticipate before your baby reaches their next developmental milestone. It serves as a valuable resource to help you track your baby’s progress and support their development accordingly.

We understand the importance of play and engagement in fostering your baby’s development. Our paediatric physiotherapists provide you with personalised guidance on how to play and engage with your baby effectively. These strategies are tailored to your baby’s specific developmental needs and are designed to enhance their motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social interactions. By implementing these techniques, you can create meaningful and enriching experiences for your baby while promoting their overall development.

Selecting the right toys is crucial for boosting your baby’s development. We provide you with detailed recommendations on age-appropriate toys that are specifically designed to support various aspects of your baby’s development. These toys are carefully selected to stimulate their senses, encourage exploration, and promote the development of fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and creativity. With our guidance, you can confidently choose toys that align with your baby’s developmental stage and interests.

Is your child meeting their milestones?

What are baby milestones at 0 to 4 months?

During the first four months of life, your baby undergoes significant changes and milestones across various areas of development. From motor skills to social and cognitive abilities, these milestones are exciting markers of progress.

  • By 2-3 months, your baby will hold their head up steadily when carried and make cooing sounds.

  • Around 3-4 months, they will reach for objects in the midline and start to recognize familiar objects and people.

What are baby milestones at 4 to 7 months?

Between 4-7 months, your baby continues to make exciting progress. During this period:

  • Your baby will begin to roll from back to tummy and demonstrate the ability to sit with support.

  • Additionally, they will explore objects by bringing them to their mouth and show improved hand-eye coordination by transferring objects from one hand to another

What are baby milestones at 7 to 9 months?

From 7-9 months, your baby begins to explore the world in more active ways. During this stage:

  • Your baby may begin to crawl on hands and knees, pull themselves up to stand with assistance, and explore objects by banging them together.

  • Their fine motor skills also advance as they start using a pincer grasp to pick up small objects.

What are baby milestones at 9 to 12 months?

Between 9-12 months, your baby’s gross motor and fine motor skills continue to progress.

  • They may start standing alone momentarily, cruising along furniture, and even taking their first independent steps.

  • Fine motor skills improve as they use their thumb and fingers to pick up small objects and attempt to feed themselves with finger foods.

What are baby milestones at 12 to 15 months?

During this period, your baby will learn to take independent steps, climb stairs with minimal assistance, and develop fine motor skills like scribbling and picking up small objects.

To support your baby’s growth and learning during this period, you can engage in activities such as:

  • Sitting on the floor, roll a ball in between the legs to your child. Encourage him or her to roll it back.

  • Dancing to the music. Follow the beats to clap, wiggle and turn, or stomp the feet.

  • Holding his/her hand and guiding him/her up the stairs or slopes

  • Holding his/her hand and walking barefooted on uneven surfaces such as the beach.

  • Putting pellets into a bottle

  • Playing with shape sorters, picture books, or cubes.

What are baby milestones at 15 to 18 months?

At 15 to 18 months, your toddler will become more independent in their movements, mastering skills like walking fast, climbing up and down furniture, and even kicking a ball.

To assist your toddler’s development between 15 and 18 months:

  • Encourage independent walking on uneven surfaces and provide safe environments like parks for balance and coordination practice.

  • Engage them in table-top activities such as building towers and pegboard play to enhance fine motor skills and cognitive abilities.

  • Offer toys like stacking cups and blocks for problem-solving and creative play.

What are baby milestones at 18 to 21 months?

Between 18 and 21 months, toddlers experience significant developmental milestones:

  • They demonstrate increased balance and coordination, walking with a narrow base and running confidently.

  • These little explorers begin to jump on the spot or hop forward, showcasing their growing physical abilities.

  • Additionally, they exhibit fine motor skills such as building intricate towers with blocks, manipulating small objects like buttons or puzzles, and scribbling with markers.

What are baby milestones at 21 to 24 months?

Between the ages of 21 and 24 months, toddlers experience significant milestones in their gross and fine motor skills.

  • They exhibit enhanced balance while walking, running, and even attempting jumps and hops.

  • They also show progress in fine motor skills by building intricate towers, manipulating small objects, scribbling with markers, and unscrewing lids from bottles.

Baby check-up schedule

Regular check-ups with your paediatric physiotherapist are vital to ensure their healthy development. These visits allow healthcare professionals to monitor your baby’s growth, evaluate their developmental milestones, and address any concerns. We recommend a quarterly check-up schedule to stay informed about your baby’s progress and receive guidance on supporting their development.

FAQs on baby developmental milestones

How to check if your baby is engaged?

Engagement refers to your baby’s active participation and interaction with their environment. It is an essential aspect of their development. You can observe signs of engagement by monitoring their response to stimuli, their social interactions, and their motor skills. Look for cues such as eye contact, smiles, babbling, reaching for objects, and turning their attention to sounds. Engaging with your baby through play, talking, and providing stimulating experiences fosters their engagement and overall development.

Why isn't my baby reaching milestones?

It’s normal for babies to reach milestones at their own pace, as every child develops uniquely. However, if you have concerns about your baby not reaching certain milestones, it’s important to consult with your paediatric physiotherapist.

Possible reasons for delayed milestones can range from individual variations in development to underlying health conditions. We can assess your baby’s progress, provide guidance, and, if necessary, recommend further evaluations or interventions to support their development effectively.
