Addressing Colic in Babies

While it is normal for babies to cry, there comes a time when you sense that your baby might be crying excessively for no apparent reason.

Could your baby be suffering from colic?

We’re here to help you and your baby address colic and sleep better.

How do I know if my baby has colic?

Colic is a condition characterized by prolonged periods of crying, usually starting around six weeks of age.

One of the most common symptoms of colic is a baby who cries for more than three hours at a time, for three or more days per week.

They may draw their knees up to their chest, clench their fists, and arch their backs. Some babies will also experience gas, fussiness, and congestion.

What causes colic?

There are several factors that could cause colic. Some of them include:

  • An immature digestive system and/or an intolerance to certain proteins in formula or cow’s milk.
  • Tension in the body that makes it difficult for gas or stools to pass through the body.
  • Inefficient latching that could cause more gas and colic pain due to tension in the mouth or neck areas.

How do we address colic in babies?

Our osteopaths treat look at areas of tension in a baby’s body that could be causing them pain or discomfort.

Osteopaths work on the areas of tension in the baby’s body by using techniques such as massage, visceral release for the bowel , gentle stretching and craniosacral technique to help take pressure off essential nerves for digestion.
