What is osteopathy and what is it good for?

Osteopathy is more than just a soothing massage for stressed muscles and joints – it’s an established system of preventive healthcare based on the idea that your whole body works as one interconnected system. Because osteopaths work to restore balance in your musculoskeletal system, osteopathy can help with conditions from digestive troubles to headaches to chronic pain, without the need for medications or surgeries. And if you’re someone looking for natural, drug-free ways to stay healthy and active, osteopathy might be exactly what you need.

How does osteopathy work?

The osteopathic philosophy is that the bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues are all interconnected, and osteopaths use manipulative stretching and massage to help reset this intricate balance.

Manual techniques such as massage, stretching, resistance and traction are used to restore the mobilisation of muscles, tendons and ligaments. Through this approach, osteopaths strive to both improve mobility in affected areas and increase blood flow – aiding in settling inflammation whilst decreasing pain.

FAQs

Starting your osteopathy journey

Osteopathy is a safe and science-backed alternative medical practice which carries little to no potential for side effects. There’s no need to be afraid of osteopathic care; it’s safe, gentle and incredibly effective. This non-invasive form of healthcare is an great way to explore holistic healing since it avoids the need for medications that can be harsh on the body.

Osteopathy can be an excellent option for many people during early pregnancy, however the safety of osteopathy during a woman’s initial trimester really depends on the severity and location of her condition. With the expertise of our qualified osteopaths, they will be able to tell you whether it would be safe or suitable for your particular situation during your consultation session.

Dress comfortably for the osteopathy session, such as active wear. Depending on the location of your symptoms, you may be asked to remove some of your clothing to better assess your body and movements. If necessary, we will provide a clean hospital gown.

Do bring along any medical notes, blood tests, X-rays, MRI results, and a list of medications you are taking (if any).

The number of sessions required is determined by the severity of your condition and will vary from person to person. Following your consultation, the osteopath will be able to provide you with more specific information about the recovery plan made for you.

Differences between osteopathy and other forms of healthcare

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who specialise in the diagnosing and addressing of a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Like osteopaths, they use manual therapies to help diagnose and aid in a wide range of conditions which may include arthritis, sciatica, tendonitis, back pain and more. Chiropractic is often used to address chronic pain conditions, while osteopathy focuses on the body as a whole and seeks to restore balance.

While osteopaths and orthopedic surgeons might look similar on the surface, they are actually quite different. Osteopathy is a more holistic approach to medicine that looks not just at the bones, but also the entire body. An osteopath takes into account the patient’s lifestyle and environment, aiming to provide relief through a variety of manual techniques like manipulation, stretching and massaging in order to improve health. Orthopedic surgery, on the other hand, focuses solely on treating and diagnosing musculoskeletal issues with methods such as x-rays, MRIs and other diagnostic tests while manipulating an area through surgery or assisting patients with physical therapy exercises.

Physiotherapists specialise in rehabilitation and exercise-based treatments for musculoskeletal injuries or illnesses. They analyse the patient’s posture and range of motion to identify areas of dysfunction and then create a personalised treatment plan. Physiotherapy is often used to treat sports or work-related injuries and can help improve strength, flexibility, range of motion and overall physical performance.

In contrast to osteopathy, physiotherapy does not take into account the body as a whole but instead focuses on relieving pain and restoring normal function. It’s most suitable for those who have sustained an injury or are recovering from surgery, as physiotherapy treatments can help to speed up recovery times.

Here at City Osteopathy & Physiotherapy, we also have a team of experienced physiotherapists to complement your osteopathic care with physiotherapy, depending on your conditions. Learn more about the benefits of physiotherapy.
