Baby Massage

Baby massage is not just a pleasant distraction for your little one, it’s also a powerful tool in the fight against a whole host of ailments. Research has shown that regular massage can help babies gain weight, promote better digestion, and even alleviate colic. The act of massaging your baby stimulates their nervous system, promoting healthy brain development and encouraging restful sleep.

Get your little one the care they need, naturally.

What is baby massage?

Baby massage is a gentle, rhythmic stroking of a baby’s body using the hands. It is a nurturing touch therapy that involves applying specific techniques and strokes to the baby’s skin, muscles, and joints. Baby massage is typically performed by parents or caregivers and can be done on babies as young as a few weeks old.

The primary goal of baby massage is to promote bonding and communication between the caregiver and the baby. It provides a nurturing and soothing experience for both the baby and the parent.

How does baby massage work?

Baby massages have been proven to be an effective calming, soothing & bonding technique. However, it is important to note that baby massage should be done with proper guidance and instruction. Parents or caregivers can learn the techniques from trained professionals, such as pediatric specialists in physiotherapy or osteopathy, or through reputable resources that provide instructions on safe and appropriate massage techniques for babies. Book a session with Wan Ying, our senior paediatric physiotherapist, to learn the proper techniques of baby massage and experience its world of benefits.

Here are some key aspects of how baby massage works:

Stimulation of the baby's senses

Through touch, massage stimulates the baby’s sense of touch, enhancing their body awareness. It can also engage other senses, such as sight, smell, and hearing, as the caregiver interacts with the baby during the massage.

Effectively sooth the baby and provide relaxation

Gentle and rhythmic strokes during the massage help to relax the baby’s muscles and calm their nervous system. It can relieve tension and discomfort, promoting better sleep and reducing fussiness or colic.

Creating a strong bond between baby and parent/caregiver

Baby massage provides an opportunity for parents or caregivers to connect with their baby through touch. It fosters a sense of security and emotional bonding between the caregiver and the baby, promoting a positive attachment relationship.

Supporting a baby's overall development in this crucial life-stage

Regular massage may support the baby’s overall development. It can help improve muscle tone, flexibility, and coordination. Additionally, the interaction during the massage can promote language development and cognitive skills as the caregiver talks or sings to the baby.
