Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological physiotherapy involves the assessment and rehabilitation of people with neurological conditions. This can involve the brain, the spinal cord, the peripheral nerves or the neuromuscular systems and can result in impairments in movement and function.

Examples of neurological conditions that we treat:

> Stroke
> Spinal Cord Injury
> Post Spinal Surgery
> Parkinson’s Disease
> Cerebral Palsy
> Multiple Sclerosis
> Traumatic Brain Injuries
> Post Brain Surgery
> Motor Neurone Disease
> Muscular Dystrophy
> Guillian Barre Syndrome
> Peripheral Nerve Injury

Injury to the central nervous system, including your brain and spinal cord, implies the messages from the brain are not reaching the affected parts of your body. This can result in loss of movement and sensation, uncoordinated movement, weak and floppy muscles, spasm, and tremor.

What does a Neuro Physiotherapist do?

Neuro physiotherapists can improve symptoms such as, difficulties with loss of balance, loss of hand and arm, or leg and foot function, walking, spasticity, and pain.

This will help to kick-start the message pathways that your brain is struggling to use, to make new pathways through repetitive actions and exercises which is termed as neuroplasticity.

What does Neuro Rehab involve?

A complete assessment will lead to suitable treatment for the person with neurological condition.

Treatments depend on the patient’s signs and symptoms. Recommended treatments for neurological conditions are motor relearning, adaptive training, functional training, gait training, etc. Patient education is equally important for the success of rehabilitation.
